H.T. HACKNEY, KNOXVILLE AREA TRANSIT TEAM WITH OAK RIDGE NATIONAL LABORATORY AND DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION - US Fed News Service, Including US State News

OAK RIDGE, Tenn., July 7 -- The U.S. Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory issued the following press release:

Local distributor H.T. Hackney and Knoxville Area Transit have teamed up with the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the Department of Transportation to help improve national highway safety, energy efficiency and performance of America's medium-class 6 and 7 trucks and transit buses.

H.T. Hackney and KAT have allocated a total of six vehicles for the Medium Truck Duty Cycle project for the purpose of evaluating vehicle systems, driving patterns and related operating conditions. ORNL researchers have equipped them with onboard data acquisition systems and sensors to monitor regular delivery and transit routes during a 12-month period.

The systems actively measure more than 60 unique data sets, capturing details on fuel consumption, brake and tire performance, speed and idling, as well as external conditions that impact duty cycle, such as precipitation, wind, road grade and weight. DOT is sharing daily downloads with ORNL researchers through the Wireless Roadside Inspection Project, another transportation research effort it has under way with ORNL.

In addition to providing H.T. Hackney and KAT with real-time data by which to make more informed business decisions, MTDC results will support DOE and DOT modeling of tomorrow's medium-class truck and transit bus as they work with researchers and industry to develop safer, more energy efficient vehicles.
